Students learn about, and perform, work on theatrical productions. This course is an introduction to the basic elements of theatre. The course will examine major trends in theatre history and will focus on the plays in the Theatre Program Season in their historical context in order to better understand the origins and development of theatre as an art form. From this historical and analytical approach, the student will come to appreciate the theatre as a distinctive expression of human experience. Topics covered include: acting/auditioning, dramaturgy/literary management, artistic management, stage management, playwriting, designers and their functions, stage crew work, and front-of-house work. Simple drafting projects and the ability to read floor plans and stage elevations are stressed. Theatre Majors are required to register for THEA190: A one-credit lab for theatre majors that complements lectures and demonstrations on the technical components of theatre productions in the Theatre Program Season.
