Course Title

Musical Theatre

Description

Although it has roots in Global Majority theatre, opera, and operetta traditions, musical theatre is one of the inherently American art forms. In this course, we will explore some of the major creative game-changers and their most innovative works. Students identify appropriate audition material and analyze solo, duet, and group dance numbers. The class focuses on understanding all aspects of the performer: singing, acting, and dancing. Students deconstruct the history and cultural significance of musical theatre, especially through textual analysis.
